Engineering academic celebrates dual professional fellowships

Dr Mehdi Kashani has marked a significant professional milestone after celebrating his Fellowship of the Institution of Civil Engineers (FICE) at the ICE Fellowship Ceremony in London on 11 September (pictured left receiving his award). During the same week, he also learned that his application for Fellowship of the Institution of Structural Engineers (FIStructE) had been successful.

Both Fellowships represent the highest grade of membership awarded by their respective professional bodies and recognise individuals who have demonstrated significant achievement, leadership and contribution to the engineering profession. The ICE describes Fellowship as recognition for those who have made a significant impact on the industry and society, while the IStructE Fellowship recognises outstanding contributions to structural engineering through professional practice, research, education and leadership.

A specialist in structural and bridge engineering, Mehdi’s work spans research, education and collaboration with professional and industry partners. The dual Fellowships recognise his standing within the profession and his contributions to advancing engineering knowledge and practice.

More recently, Mehdi brought together consortium partners, industry representatives and members of the wider infrastructure community at the University of Southampton for the REVIVE project kick-off and first technical workshop. The event explored the assessment, monitoring and service-life extension of ageing reinforced concrete infrastructure. It also marked the launch of his new Bridges to the Future (B2F) Lab, which brings together research on bridges, ageing infrastructure, structural health monitoring, advanced sensing, digital technologies and sustainable infrastructure engineering.

Mehdi is grateful to the many colleagues, collaborators and mentors who have supported him throughout his academic and professional career. He sees both Fellowships as recognition not only of his own journey, but also of the research, education and professional collaborations he has been fortunate to be part of over the years.
