Southampton astrophysics students recognised by leading astronomy society

Recent graduate Tristan King (pictured above), who completed the MPhys Astrophysics with Year Abroad programme, received an Undergraduate Honorable Mention in the Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Awards at the 247th meeting of the American Astronomical Society (AAS).
Tristan investigated whether supergiant stars can affect the galaxies in which they live. His recognised poster, ‘An ALMA Continuum and Spectral Analysis of the Stellar Winds of Supergiant Stars in Westerlund 1’, was based on research completed during his placement at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

The recognition follows a similar success for Southampton student Fi Redmen, who received an honourable mention at the 245th AAS meeting in 2025 for research also undertaken at the Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian.

The Chambliss Astronomy Achievement Student Awards celebrate outstanding research by undergraduate and graduate students presenting their work at AAS meetings. They recognise the quality of both the scientific research and its presentation to the astronomy community.

Dr Sandra De Jesus Raimundo, academic lead for the Year Abroad programme, said:
‘We are incredibly proud of our students and delighted that their work has received an honourable mention at the AAS meeting. Their achievement reflects the outstanding research opportunities available through their Southampton degree and the international quality of the work they produce.’

The students’ success at consecutive AAS meetings highlights the strength of Southampton’s astrophysics education and the opportunities available through the Year Abroad programme. Students can spend a year studying and undertaking research at a partner institution overseas, gaining international experience while contributing to cutting-edge scientific projects.
